Prosecutors to discuss 'Charging Decisions in Child Abuse Cases,' June 24

The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan, Child Abuse Prosecution Resources Unit, is pleased to present a training for prosecutors on "Charging Decisions in Child Abuse Cases" on Thursday, June 24. This online training will run from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. via Zoom. This is a free, interactive training specifically for prosecutors and assistant prosecutors.

Making a charging decision is one of the most important functions a prosecutor must undertake. Exercising prosecutorial discretion, making the decision to charge or decline prosecution and what charges one should bring are always challenging, but are amplified in cases involving the maltreatment of children.

This training will review the standards and ethical considerations which govern prosecutors, the statutes and case law that govern child abuse and child sexual assault cases, and will provide attendees with hands-on decision-making practice using case scenarios in breakout rooms.

The CAPR team at PAAM hopes to provide attendees with a training experience as close as possible to a live in-person training. Attendees are asked to treat this training as if it were a live in-person training. Attendees should only register if they can devote the full time allotted to the training.

This training satisfies 3.5 hours of continuing legal education and 1 hour of ethics training for purposes of PAAM's Best Practices Recommendations.

To register for this free webinar, prosecutors and assistant prosecutors should visit www.michiganprosecutor.org and click on "training." Registrants will receive an email a few days prior to the webinar with details on how to join the webinar and with the scenarios that will be used during training Anyone who has not received an email by the morning of June 24 should email Pam Maas at maasp@michigan.gov.
