Board approves funding to complete $12 million in new local road projects across Oakland County

Last month, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners adopted a series of resolutions that secure funding to complete nearly $12 million in new local road projects. Oakland County’s annual Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP) provides funding to Oakland County cities and villages for repairs and improvements on roadways under their jurisdiction. The program makes county investments in local roads, which is then matched with funding from Oakland County communities.

“We are fixing roads in Oakland County in our local communities,” Board Chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak) said. “No other county in Michigan is partnering with our local communities to fix local roads like we are with the LRIP program. Better roads mean safer roads, increased economic development and overall better communities.”

For 2022, the county board appropriated nearly $2 million in county funds to make sure these projects happen this year.

“Roads continue to be a problem for everyone across the state and Oakland County,” Commissioner Michael Spisz (R-Oxford) said. “This program is a great way for Oakland County and our communities to work together to improve local infrastructure for our residents.”

The LRIP has driven an estimated $128 million investment in local roads across the county since 2016. In 2017, the Board of Commissioners’ LRIP received national recognition when it was selected for a National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award in the category of Community and Economic Development.
