Nick Schroeck named executive director for environmental law org

Nick Schroeck has been named executive director of the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center, an independent, not-for-profit, public interest environmental law organization.

Schroeck, who has been a volunteer attorney with the organization since 2008, was selected as executive director by the GLELC board of directors.

“We are excited to have attracted such a skilled candidate for the position, and the board is confident that Nick’s proven leadership abilities and knowledge of environmental issues will truly be an asset for our organization and for the environment,” said Kathryn Loomis, Board President.

Before being named executive director of the GLELC, Schroeck served as a regional representative for the National Wildlife Federation out of their Great Lakes office. Prior to that, he was a Sea Grant Fellow with the Great Lakes Commission.

“While the Great Lakes region has been blessed with effective advocates, there has been an unfortunate lack of available public interest environmental legal services,” Schroeck said. “We look forward to serving the unmet legal needs of environmental and community organizations in Michigan.”

Noah Hall, founder and board treasurer of the GLELC, said “I am very pleased that we have grown so quickly in both effective work for our clients, and in organizational capacity, as demonstrated by Nick’s hiring as executive director. We are grateful for the generous support of the Erb Family Foundation, The Joyce Foundation, and the in-kind donation from Wayne State University Law School in order to expand our operations.”

The GLELC has a close partnership with the Wayne State University Law School Environmental Clinic, providing an opportunity for students to learn the critical skills of policy advocacy and environmental legal strategy. Schroeck teaches the Environmental Law Clinic and supervises the students’ work on GLELC projects.

Law students can study in Toronto this summer

The Thomas M. Cooley Law School invites law students interested in summer foreign study to apply for the school’s Toronto, Canada experience. The six-week program takes place May 17-June 26 and is divided into two three-week sessions. Students can participate in one or both sessions and choose among such courses as NAFTA, International Criminal Law, and International Business Overview.

In the 10 years that the Toronto program has been in operation, it has attracted students from more than 35 law schools. Cooley also operates a spring semester program in Australia and New Zealand.

Foreign study applicants must be currently enrolled and in good standing in an ABA-accredited or state-approved law school. Applicants must have completed at least one year of law school. Guest student tuition is $675/credit hour or a reduced total tuition of $3,900 if taking all six credits, making it one of the most affordable foreign study programs in the nation. There is also a $100 administrative fee.

For more information about the program, visit cooley.edu/foreignstudy or contact WaLynda Thompson at (517) 371-5140, ext. 2849 or by e-mail at thompsow@cooley.edu.
