Miller Canfield lawyer appointed first Young Lawyer Representative
Miller Canfield associate Suzanne L. Wahl has been appointed the first-ever Young Lawyer Representative (YLR) to the American Bar Association’s Trade, Sports, and Professional Associations Committee of the Section of Antitrust Law.
At Miller Canfield, Wahl practices commercial litigation as well as antitrust law. She received her J.D. from University of Michigan Law School, cum laude, and her B.A. from Dartmouth College, summa cum laude. She resides in Ann Arbor.
Federal appeals court will revisit rape case
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — In a rare decision, an entire federal appeals court will revisit a Michigan case to determine whether the sex life of an alleged rape victim can be fair game for the defense at trial.
In a 2-1 ruling in February, an appeals panel said Lewis Gagne's rights were violated when an Ingham County judge excluded some evidence.
The full 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals threw out that decision Tuesday and said it will rehear the case. Chief Judge Alice Batchelder believes the earlier ruling could have threatened rape-shield laws in Michigan and other states.
Gagne was sentenced in 2001 to up to 45 years in prison for first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He claimed he had consensual group sex with the woman. He was not allowed to tell jurors about an earlier act.
Convicted murderer in Ohio fights extradition in 41-year-old slaying
PONTIAC (AP) — A convicted murderer is fighting Oakland County’s efforts to return him to Michigan on a charge related to a 41-year-old slaying.
Prosecutor Jessica Cooper said Tuesday that 67-year-old Nolan Ray George won’t willingly leave an Ohio jail to face a first-degree murder warrant in the 1968 death of Gwendolyn Perry, who was strangled with pantyhose in Pontiac.
Cooper said she will seek a governor’s warrant for George’s return.
George spent a dozen years in Michigan prisons after a second-degree murder conviction in the 1968 death of a Lake Orion woman.
After his Michigan prison release, George relocated to Ohio where he was convicted of manslaughter in the 1982 death of another woman.
