Non-profit awards $10,000 in scholarships and book awards

Urban Solutions, Inc., a local non-profit corporation awarded $10,000 in scholarships and book awards this year at a recent Detroit Rotary Club meeting. Urban Solutions, Inc. has given a scholarship every year since 1982.

Nancy Allen remembered her husband, Judge Alex J. Allen, Jr. of the 36th District Court with a $1,000 scholarship. Other scholarships were sponsored by the families of the late Magistrate Charles Hammons of the 36th District Court, attorney Bennie Grier and Herman B. Howard.  The organization is also supported by the community, the law firm of Sommers Schwartz, Silver and Schwartz, Vincent and Betty Little and Dr. Roy Robertson.

The following students received $1,000 scholarships toward college: Richard Brinkley, Demetrius Edwards, and Fatima Sow from Cass Tech; Iesha Mitchell from Renaissance; and James Curenton II and Anthony Kinsey from University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy.

Denzel Warren from Renaissance; Shanara Burke from Mumford; Antonio Douthet from Northwestern; Johnetta Williams from Cooley; Stevon Rendon and Tracy Gallardo from Western International; Jamison Harris and Ashley Otis from Detroit School of the Arts received $500 book awards.
