More than 150 lawyers, judges, and other legal professionals attended “Platinum in the Profession: A Conference Highlighting African-American Leadership in the Law” held Oct. 22 at the Fort Shelby Doubletree Hotel. The conference highlighted the accomplishments of some of Detroit and Michigan’s most outstanding African-American attorneys and judges. Michelle Alexander, author of “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” was the lunch keynote speaker.
“Platinum in the Profession” was presented by the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section in conjunction with the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association and the Barristers of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association.
Chairpersons Angelique Strong Marks and Brandy Robinson said the program would not have been possible without the support of sponsors, including platinum sponsor ArvinMeritor and the Breakfast Sponsors, Butzel Long and Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn and the Reception Sponsor Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
By showcasing the area’s top African-American lawyers and leaders, Strong Marks hopes to show young people that there are outstanding African-American attorneys who also give back, who make a difference.
