Courts’ discretion to bar cameras under scrutiny by Supreme Court
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Every oral argument at the Michigan Supreme Court is on a government TV channel. So why has the appeals court sometimes denied video recording of its cases?
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman says it’s time to revisit the rule after a three-judge panel at the appeals court refused to allow video during arguments in a medical-marijuana case last fall.
Judges Henry William Saad and David Sawyer based their decision on the “fair administration of justice,” but they didn’t explain just what that meant. A documentary maker wanted to record the arguments in a closely watched case.
Markman says there have been major changes in technology as well as attitudes on public access to the workings of government.

Judge orders Bay Mills to close down Vanderbilt casino by midday
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction ordering the Bay Mills Indian Community to close down its casino in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula.
Judge Paul Maloney in Kalamazoo issued the ruling Tuesday morning ordering the casino to close by midday. The casino in Vanderbilt opened in November.
The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians filed suit last year to try to force the casino with roughly 40 slot machines to close. The Michigan Attorney General’s Office also sued in an effort to shut down the casino.
Opponents say the casino, which is located south of the Bay Mills reservation in the Upper Peninsula, is not legal because it’s not on Indian land. Bay Mills disagrees and says the casino is legal.
