Third Judicial Circuit to celebrate Law Day
The Third Circuit Court will host their 24th annual Law Day program on Friday, May 6. The program is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and will be held at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice. The national theme for Law Day 2011 is “The Legacy of John Adams, from Boston to Guantanamo.”
Presiding Judge Timothy M. Kenny will lead the program. More than 180 students from schools throughout Wayne County will attend the annual event.
This year’s contest includes writing an alternate closing argument for the Boston Massacre. Students will also have the opportunity to observe hearings in various courtrooms throughout the Criminal Division.
Defense attorney Steve Fishman will join in this year’s activities as the guest speaker.
WLAM Wayne Region to hold annual lunch meeting May 12
The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan – Wayne Region will hold its annual lunch meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 12 at Andiamo Detroit Riverfront, Renaissance Center. The event will feature State Bar of Michigan President-Elect Julie Fershtman who will speak on “Learning to Lead.”
The Region will swear in its new board and start its new year-long theme on individual leadership development.
Fershtman, who is a WLAM member, will help kick off the theme by sharing her advice and personal experiences “Learning to Lead” in various aspects of her professional career. Julie’s career has included work in a mid-sized firm, years of success as a solo practitioner and then small firm owner, to most recently becoming a shareholder in a mid-sized firm this past fall while taking along her associate. She succeeded in all of this while tackling numerous leadership roles in local bar associations and moving to the top of the State Bar of Michigan.
Fershtman concentrates her practice in the areas of general insurance defense and coverage, premises liability, business litigation, and sporting and recreational liability. Her clients range from major insurance companies and business to individuals. In addition, she is considered to be one of the nation’s leading attorneys in the field of equine law, a practice she developed as a result of her life-long interest in horses.
Fershtman is also a prolific writer with nearly 200 published articles and three books. She and her husband, who is also an attorney, have a teenage daughter. Fershtman will be sworn in as president of the State Bar of Michigan in September at the SBM annual meeting in Dearborn.
