District judge dies

DETROIT (AP) -- A Detroit district court judge was found dead in an east side Detroit home Friday. Police found George Chatman's body after responding to a 911 call.

Chatman's death is under investigation.

The longtime Detroit attorney was appointed last year by then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm to fill a vacancy at 36th District Court. His term was to expire on Jan. 1, 2013.

The 66-year-old Chatman had been in private practice and before his district court appointment was a member of the United Auto Workers Legal Services Plan Cooperating Attorney Panel.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and earned his law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy.
