UDMLaw hosts fourth annual 5K Race for Justice

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law announces its Fourth Annual 5K Race for Justice to be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m. along Detroit's majestic new RiverWalk. The race is organized by the School's Voice for Justice Committee in conjunction with the Alumni Relations Office and Student Bar Association. It is open to alumni, students, faculty, children, and anyone else who wishes to join the fun by either walking or running the course. Proceeds benefit the UDM Law Public Interest Fellowship Program, which provides stipends to UDM Law students to serve during the summer months in areas of public service. The race is part of UDM's annual reunion weekend, which this year marks the school's 99th year. Other events associated with the reunion are a "Lounge Party" at the Westin Book Cadillac Saturday evening from 7-11 p.m. and a "Pub Night" Oct. 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the South Bar in Birmingham. Tickets to the Lounge Party are $100 and tickets to the Pub Night are $25 per person. UDM Law strives to teach students to be both skilled practitioners and compassionate professionals. The fellowships funded by the Public Interest Fellowship Program expand the School's longstanding tradition of service to the community and provide students the opportunity to learn while making a difference. Fellowships allow students to work in the public interest sector, enabling them to fulfill their call to serve and work toward the public good. Students selected to receive the fellowships spend approximately eight weeks as summer interns for non-profit organizations, serving or advocating for the poor, disadvantaged, marginalized, or underrepresented of society. Since 2003, the UDM Law Public Interest Fellowship Program has funded approximately 70 law students to serve primarily in Detroit, but also in locations throughout the United States and across the globe. Recipients have done internships with various non-profit entities, including: * African Women's Lawyer's Association, Accra, Ghana. * Archdiocese of Detroit - Immigration Legal Services. * Association of Defense Counsel - International Criminal Tribunal, the Hague. * Association Jeunes pour Jeunes Social Center, Khemisset, Morocco. * City of Detroit Human Rights Department. * Kids Voice, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. * Maurice and Jane Sugar Law Center, Detroit. * Multicultural Council of Windsor, Ontario. * ProSeniors, Cincinnati. * Salvation Army's William Booth Legal Aid Clinic, Detroit. * Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services of Michigan. Registration is $25 through Friday, Oct. 28, and $30 on race day. Register online for the 2011 UDM Law Race for Justice at www.active.com.
