Wayne County offices announce closings
In order to manage furlough days in Wayne County, Treasurer Raymond J. Wojtowicz and Register of Deeds Bernard J. Youngblood have announced their offices will be closed to the public the first and third Monday of each month.
“In these difficult economic times we are seeking to provide the highest level of service to the public. With fewer resources, we believe that furlough days provide the best solution,” said Youngblood.
Due to budget cuts Wayne County employee unions have agreed to concessions amounting to 10 percent of wages. To implement these concessions employees have agreed to take two unpaid furlough days each month.
Starting November 7, therefore, the offices of the Wayne County Treasurer and the Register of Deeds will be closed the first and third Monday each month until further notice. Should that Monday fall on a holiday the furlough day would be observed the Tuesday after the holiday.
“Our employees are suffering the effects of these concessions; we want to minimize the disruption to the office and to the public,” added Wojtowicz.
Wayne Law faculty votes to adopt SBM’s diversity pledge
The Wayne State University Law School faculty voted at its October meeting to adopt the State Bar of Michigan’s Pledge to Achieve Diversity and Inclusion.
“A commitment to diversity is part of the very fabric of this law school, and adopting this pledge is a tangible way of expressing it,” said Wayne Law Dean Robert M. Ackerman. “The opening of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights and our increased work in the areas of public interest and social justice law are among the many ways we are advancing this commitment.”
The pledge notes that “diversity and inclusion are core values of the legal profession, and that these values require a sustained commitment to strategies of inclusion.” It concludes, “Therefore, we pledge to continue working with others to achieve diversity and inclusion in the education, hiring, retention, and promotion of Michigan's attorneys and in the elevation of attorneys to leadership positions within our organizations, the judiciary, and the profession.”
Cooley Law School dedicates memorial garden to honor alum
A recently dedicated memorial garden serves as an attractive green space next to Cooley’s recently renovated Center for Research and Study. Darryl Parsell, a 1979 graduate of Cooley, director of the Cooley Law School Alumni Relations Office, and an avid gardener, died of cancer Aug. 24, 2010.
