Ex-Delphi chief must pay $215,000 in SEC case
DETROIT (AP) — The former chief executive of auto-parts maker Delphi has been ordered to pay $215,000 for misrepresenting a financial transaction with General Motors back in 2000.

The decision Monday by Detroit federal Judge Avern Cohn comes months after a jury said J.T. Battenberg III was liable for bookkeeping errors and misrepresentations to accountants. Battenberg was cleared of more serious civil charges of financial fraud.

The case centered on a $237 million transaction involving warranty costs with Delphi Corp.’s former parent, General Motors. The Securities and Exchange Commission claimed Delphi manipulated its earnings by concealing the GM transaction.

The judge says Battenberg had the “least experience” in accounting matters among the Delphi employees who were aware of the misreporting. Cohn also ordered former Delphi accountant Paul Free to pay $118,500.

Michigan lawmakers weigh protections for seniors
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan lawmakers are preparing to vote on measures aimed at better protecting senior citizens and other vulnerable adults.

The Senate discussed the broad, multi-bill package Tuesday and could vote on the proposals later in the week.

Police departments would be required to notify media and other law enforcement agencies when they receive reports of missing seniors or vulnerable adults.

Nursing home employees who had reasonable suspicion of mistreatment of seniors would be required to report the matter to the state. In some cases, abuse would have to be reported to police.

Felony penalties would be toughened for embezzling from a vulnerable adult if the money or property obtained had a value of $50,000 or more. Some offenses would have maximum penalties of 15 years or 20 years in prison.
