Judge to hold court at high school

37th District Court Judge Matthew P. Sabaugh will be presiding over a special court session at Lincoln High School in Warren on Friday, February 17 at 9am. The 37th District Court has received prior approval from the State Court Administrator's office to hear cases off-site at local schools. Judge Sabaugh began holding court in schools as part of his mission to create public awareness of the court system. Judge Sabaugh said "Court in School" has been a success. "Yes, I hope this helps to inspire future lawyers and judges. Moreover, this helps all students to become smarter citizens, no matter which vocation they choose. These students are the future and they should be familiar with our legal system." Judge Sabaugh coordinated the special court session with Lincoln Principal Charles Lesser. Sabaugh said that the court sessions provide a unique learning environment for students. "Students get to close their books and see how the laws in our country affect real people. Students get to see the Constitution in action and to get a better understanding of the legal system. They can also learn about different career opportunities in law and criminal justice. Just as importantly, many of the cases will show them the consequences of poor decisions and help them to make smart decisions in their own lives." said Sabaugh. "Some of the defendants are not far out of high school themselves and the students can really relate to them. Young people listen to their peers- when they see a young man or woman like themselves speak out against drugs and alcohol, it has a powerful effect. Everyone knows that most drug and alcohol addictions begin with experimentation in high school. I want these kids to realize the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse before its too late." The program will include a short presentation by Judge Sabaugh, his court staff and several local attorneys. Published: Wed, Feb 15, 2012
