Justice Kelly to appear in ‘The Barber of Seville’ Oct. 19-21
A justice by day and an operatic performer by night, Marilyn Kelly took to the stage October 13 for the Michigan Opera Theater’s production of “The Barber of Seville.”
Justice Kelly, who will retire from the Supreme Court later this year, earned a supporting, non-singing role in the opera, auditioning against 35 others to win the part.
Before taking the bench, Kelly was a courtroom attorney for 17 years in Michigan. . In 1988, she was elected to the Michigan Court of Appeals for a six-year term and re-elected in 1994. She was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court for an eight-year term in 1996, and re-elected in 2004 for an eight-year term which expires January 1, 2013. She served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 2009 to 2011.
Those who missed opening night can catch Justice Kelly again this weekend, October 19-21 at the Detroit Opera House.
As an aside, Justice Kelly isn’t the only member of her “family” to appear on the opera stage. Her dog, Duff, appeared in the Michigan Opera Theater’s production of “La Boheme” several years ago.

Bassett elected to board of Michigan Women in Finance

 Laura M. Bassett, an associate in Miller Canfield’s Detroit office, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Michigan Women in Finance.
Founded in 2004, the Michigan Women in Finance is a nonprofit educational and professional networking organization for women in the finance industry.  The board consists of 16 members representing a diverse group of women finance professionals.
At Miller Canfield, Bassett advises public entities on a range of financing and related legal matters, including economic development initiatives, municipal infrastructure finance and school finance. She has particular experience assisting financially distressed municipalities and school districts to make informed decisions to achieve their objectives.
She received her J.D. from Wayne State University Law School, her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and her B.A. from Kalamazoo College.
She resides in West Bloomfield.
