Edmund M. Brady Jr., 63rd president of the SBM, passes at age 71

The State Bar of Michigan announced Monday the passing of Edmund M. Brady Jr., who died November 9 at the age of 71.

A graduate of the University of Detroit School of Law, Brady was honored as its Alumnus of the Year in 2003. In addition to his presidency in 1997-98, he served in a number of other State Bar capacities. He was first elected to the Board of Commissioners in 1991, was elected State Bar treasurer in 1994, and vice president in 1995. He also served on a number of commissioner committees during his tenure, including the Executive Committee, Fiscal Committee and Commissioner Committee on Race/Ethnic Issues in the Courts. Among his other service to the State Bar of Michigan, he chaired the Communications Committee 1992-94, was a member of the Local Bar Liaison Committee, and chaired the Long Range Planning Committee. Brady also served as President of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association (1990-1991), Director of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel (1980-1981), President of the Association of Defense Trial Counsel (1980-1981), a fellow in the International Society of Barristers, and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He is a past president of the University of Detroit Law Alumni Association, from which he received its Award of Distinction. His other awards include the President's Award from the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores; Exceptional Performance Citation, Defense Research Institute, Distinguished Service Award from the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, and the Silver Key Award of Excellence from the American Bar Association, Law Student Division.

He is survived by his wife Marie Pierre, children Edmund III (Holly), Meghan Hishmeh (Robert), Timothy (Michelle). He was predeceased by daughter Kathleen. He is also survived by grandchildren Blake, Brady, Alex, Hayden, Henry and Frances.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home, 16300 Mack, Grosse Pointe Park. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. (with visitation at 10 a.m.) Friday, Nov. 16, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford, Grosse Pointe Woods.
