Marijuana seizure affirmed in drug case
IRON RIVER, Mich. (AP) — An Upper Peninsula man busted with a cooler of marijuana in his home has failed to convince an appeals court that it was an illegal seizure.
Christopher Bowser of Iron County is serving a 27-month prison sentence for marijuana possession. In 2010, officers noticed a cooler during a 90-minute interview with him.
Officers opened the cooler and found marijuana. The officers said the interview was cordial and that Bowser had disclosed the contents of the cooler before it was opened.
Bowser claimed he was coerced. But a federal appeals court last week said Bowser wanted to cooperate with the officers, who made no immediate arrest, pulled no guns and made no threats.
AG Schuette brings charge in mortgage processor probe
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has brought a racketeering charge against the former president of a mortgage document processing company.
Lorraine Brown is charged with one count of conducting criminal enterprises, or racketeering, in Kent County’s 61st District Court.
The attorney general’s office says Brown authorized the fraudulent signing of mortgage documents filed in Michigan.
Schuette said Monday that arrangements were being made for the Alpharetta, Ga., resident to surrender to Michigan authorities. An arraignment will be scheduled at a later date.
The charge she’s facing is a 20-year felony.
Last week, Brown pleaded guilty to a federal charge in Florida and reached a plea agreement on related state charges in Missouri.
A message seeking comment on the Michigan charges was left for Brown's lawyer on Monday.
Lawyer ordered to pay $8K in contempt case
DETROIT (AP) — The ex-lawyer for a Detroit-area man whose wife was strangled has been ordered to pay $8,000 in a contempt case.
David Griem is the former attorney for Robert Bashara, who has been called a person of interest in his wife's killing.
A Detroit judge on Monday ordered Griem to pay $8,000 in attorney and court fees after being found in civil contempt of court last month.
Griem was accused of improperly sharing evidence with Bashara's family and issuing unauthorized subpoenas.
He didn’t comment after Monday’s hearing.
Bashara is a businessman from Grosse Pointe Park. He admitted to trying to hire someone to kill the man charged in the slaying of his wife.
Jane Bashara’s body was found Jan. 25 in her Mercedes-Benz SUV in a Detroit alley.
