Judge Sabaugh holds special court session at Lincoln High School

37th District Court Judge Matthew P. Sabaugh presided over a special court session at Lincoln High School in Warren May 3. The 37th District Court received approval from the State Court Administrator’s office to hear cases off-site at local schools. Judge Sabaugh began holding court in schools more than four years ago as part of his mission to create public awareness of the court system.
“Court in School” has proved to be a success at high schools and middle schools in the district.
“Young people today need to know the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and criminal behavior. When the students see the consequences, they can learn from mistakes of others and make smarter decisions in their own lives,” said Sabaugh. “I would much rather come to the school and speak to these students about the dangers of criminal behavior then to have them appear before me in court.”
The docket included several criminal cases scheduled for sentencing.
Sabaugh said he appreciates Lincoln Principal Thomas Hill for welcoming him.
“The other side of this is that the students are exposed to the possibility of a career in the law, law enforcement or public service,” said Sabaugh. “Court in school isn’t all about scaring students straight. This is an opportunity for these kids to see positive role models in their community.”
