MJA gives 2013 Hilda Gage Award to former judge Barry L. Howard
The Michigan Judges Association has announced that the Hon. Barry L. Howard, formerly of the 6th Circuit Court in Oakland County, is the recipient of its 2013 Judicial Excellence Award, named after the late Hilda Gage. The award recognizes those who have excelled in trial and docket management, legal scholarship, and contributions to the profession and the community. The award honors current or former judges who serve their profession and their communities with integrity, skill, and courage every day.
Barry Howard is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Detroit School of Law. He served as a circuit judge for the Oakland County court from 1989 to 2001, serving as its chief judge from January 2000 to April 2001. During that time, he taught for the Michigan Judicial Institute, and served the Michigan Judges Association as a board member and as its President.
Judge Howard has continued his service to the profession and the judiciary after he left the bench. He was co-chair of the Judicial Crossroads Task Force. He is currently Of Counsel to the law firm of Lipson, Neilson, Cole, Seltzer & Garin, PC.
Barry Howard is a former recipient of the Champion of Justice Award by the State Bar of Michigan. In 1995, he was named “one of the top five most respected judges” in the state in a survey of lawyers conducted for WDIV-Channel 4. Western Michigan University named its Barry L. Howard Medallion Scholarship after him.
Oral arguments handbook offers valuable tips for attorneys who practice before Supreme Court
Lansing, Mich., September 3, 2013 – Attorneys who appear before the Michigan Supreme Court have a valuable new resource: a comprehensive, online handbook about how to prepare for and argue their cases.
Entitled “Guide for Counsel in Cases to Be Argued in the Michigan Supreme Court,” the handbook was compiled by Supreme Court staff with extensive input from Michigan Solicitor General John Bursch.
Topics include preparation for oral argument, filing, brief writing tips, oral argument procedures, and more. It is especially designed for those making their first appearance before the Court. The guide includes general information plus a directory of offices and programs.

WSU Law Reunion and Treasure of Detroit
Wayne State University Law School Dean Jocelyn Benson, the Wayne Law Board of Visitors and the Wayne Law Alumni Association have announced that the 2013 Treasure of Detroit Gala and Reunion Celebration Weekend will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28. The 2013 Reunion Reception will be held Friday, Sept. 27 from 7-10 p.m. at the Ford Field Hall of Legends, 2000 Brush Street in Detroit. Cost is $50 per person and includes, hors d’oeuvres, open bar, dancing and complimentary parking in Ford Field Parking Deck.
Classes honored include 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. The Wayne State Law Treasure of Detroit Gala will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, from 6 - 10 p.m. at the Atheneum Suite Hotel, 400 Monroe Street in Detroit. The evening begins with a reception with open bar, plated dinner and awards program. Optional black tie. Cost is $150 per person with valet included and discounted hotel accommodations available.
