Councilman agrees to law license suspension

DETROIT (AP) — A lawyer for a Detroit city councilman says his client likely will face a 45-day suspension of his law license and pay $500 in a settlement with a former client.
Todd Russell Perkins tells The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press that the settlement involving George Cushingberry Jr. was reached without a formal hearing as both sides sought a resolution for the claim.
In an unrelated incident, Cushingberry was stopped last week by Detroit police and ticketed for failing to use a turn signal in a case that drew wide attention.
In the settlement involving the former client, Perkins says Cushingberry "did not accept liability for anything." A complaint with the Attorney Discipline Board says the client didn't pay a bill and Cushingberry dropped the case without telling the court.
