Harvard Law School dean to speak at ABA meeting

Denny Chin, a federal judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, and Harvard Law School Dean Martha L. Minow will be among the featured speakers at the American Bar Association Spring 2014 National Legal Malpractice Conference in Boston April 30-May 2. The conference offers programming on legal liability issues and developments.

Conference highlights include:
“Law and Forgiveness” — Although more often a topic in personal relationships and religious ideals, forgiveness can also be an issue in law. Harvard Dean Minow will consider several questions: Should forgiveness by victims affect criminal prosecution or sanctions? Should law promote apologies in the context of alleged malpractice? When should legal rules and practices promote forgiveness, apology and reconciliation?

“Insurance Marketplace ‘Look Ahead Five Years’” — A highly experienced panel of speakers will look into the crystal ball and give predictions about the future of the marketplace from the perspectives of both the insurer and the law firm.

“Dancing with the Devil: Aiding and Abetting Liability for Lawyers” — Most often seen in litigation related to Ponzi schemes but also appearing in connection with bank failures and transactions gone awry, victims are attempting to side-step privity rules to pursue third-party claims against attorneys. This discussion will focus on the most pressing questions in aiding-and-abetting litigation, including coverage issues, effective defense strategies and the results of litigated cases.

“Case Law Developments” — This session is your opportunity to immerse in a survey of new law that is redrawing the lawyer liability practice road map. Panelists will synthesize the hottest new cases and interpret their broader meaning.
