Michigan Supreme Court appoints interim grievance administrator
The Michigan Supreme Court has appointed John F. Van Bolt to be the Interim Grievance Administrator of the Attorney Grievance Commission (AGC). A past president of the National Council of Lawyer Disciplinary Boards, Van Bolt brings more than 30 years of experience in attorney discipline to the AGC. Van Bolt will lead the AGC while the Michigan Supreme Court undertakes a national search for a permanent Grievance Administrator.
Prior to retiring in 2013, Van Bolt served for more than 25 years as the executive director and general counsel of the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board, the adjudicative arm of the Michigan Supreme Court in matters involving the regulation and discipline of Michigan lawyers. Prior to his appointment to that position in 1986, Van Bolt investigated and prosecuted charges of attorney misconduct for six years as an associate counsel at the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission. His professional memberships include the State Bar of Michigan, National Organization of Bar Counsel, the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, the ABA Center for Professional Responsibility, and the Michigan Bar Foundation.
Pursuant to the Michigan Constitution and court rule, the Michigan Supreme Court is responsible for the supervision and discipline of Michigan attorneys. To help fulfill this responsibility, the Attorney Grievance Commission serves as the prosecution arm of the Court to investigate complaints and protect the public, the courts, and the legal profession. The Supreme Court appoints the administrator and deputy administrator and entrusts them with management of the Attorney Grievance Commission.

The general meeting of PALS will take place 6 p.m. Thursday, May 15 at Polish Village Cafe, 2nd Floor, 2990 Yemens Ave. in Hamtramck. The guest speaker will be attorney Charles Bullock, partner at Stevenson & Bullock, P.L.C. Bullock has been a Super Lawyer since 2010 and Dbusiness Top Lawyer in 2011 and 2012. He has contributed to several scholarly articles on bankruptcy practice in Michigan Lawyer Weekly and other publications. Bullock is a former contributing editor for “Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice” as well as being an Adjunct Professor at the Thomas M. Cooley School of Law. He has testified to the United States Senate Commission on the Judiciary in Washington D.C. regarding the impact of bankruptcy practice on small businesses. He also serves on the subcommittee to revise local bankruptcy rules for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He is a member of Michigan and Tennessee Bar.
