 Cooley Law’s elder law clinic receives $10,000 grant from foundation

Cooley Law School’s Sixty Plus, Inc., Elderlaw Clinic (Sixty Plus) received a $10,000 grant from the Capitol Region Community Foundation. The grant will allow Sixty Plus to continue to provide legal assistance to senior citizens in the Lansing community.  Sixty Plus provides legal services for individuals needing assistance with protective proceedings, housing, consumer protection, wills and estate planning, and family law.

“We are thankful for the support from the Capitol Region Community Foundation,” said Kimberly O'Leary, director of Cooley’s Sixty Plus clinic. “The senior population struggles with protecting their rights and it is important that resources be available to support their needs.” 
 
The foundation's support will allow Sixty Plus to extend outreach into special populations that have traditionally not been aware of free legal services for seniors. Cooley students, faculty and staff will actively increase the amount of services available to African American and Spanish-speaking elderly. 

A portion of the grant will be used to pay outreach specialists, Cooley graduate Tracey Yarborough and Cooley students Penelope Williams and Jennifer Gallardo, to work directly in the community at events such as the Cristo Rey annual fiesta.  

“We will print brochures in Spanish and have better coordinated services with Elder Law of Michigan and Legal Services of South Central Michigan,” said O'Leary. “Together, our agencies provide a comprehensive range of free legal services to many seniors.”  

Sixty Plus provides legal help to persons 60 years of age or older, primarily in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties. There are no income guidelines for services provided, however priority is given to people in greatest social and economic need and those with public benefit problems.
 

Mark Weiss Day at Comerica Park

The 12th annual Mark Weiss Day is Friday, Aug. 1, at Comerica Park. This year, the American League Champion Detroit Tigers take on the Colorado Rockies. The picnic starts at 5:30 p.m. on party deck #1 and the game begins at 7:08 p.m. The actual cost for the picnic and ticket to the game is $52. Organizers are requesting a minimum of $125 for each ticket. The remaining $73 will be a tax deductible gift to the Mark Weiss Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was established as a joint project of Wayne Law and the Michigan Association for Justice, formerly known as the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association. Weiss, who graduated from Wayne Law in 1969, devoted his skills to fighting for the rights of the poor and powerless and protecting the civil rights of all litigants. To date, 36 scholarships have been awarded to Wayne Law students in memory of Mark Weiss. Tickets will be mailed directly to participants through July 25. If a purchase is made the week of the game participants are required to personally pick up the tickets from the Office of Special Events and Services at Wayne State University.
