The Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) announced their endorsements for statewide office Tuesday. At the top of the endorsement list are Mark Schauer for governor and Mark Totten for attorney general.
The Michigan Association for Justice endorsed the following candidates in this year’s election:
Governor: Mark Schauer
Lt. Governor: Lisa Brown
Attorney General: Mark Totten
Supreme Court (2-year term): Judge Deborah Thomas
University of Michigan Regent: Michael J. Behm
“We are very excited to support these candidates,” said Scott A. Goodwin, president of MAJ. “They represent the core values that our organization stands for and we know that they will stand with Michigan’s citizens and fight to protect our civil justice system.”
As a member of the Michigan Legislature, Mark Schauer worked hard to ensure that the civil justice system was open and fair for all Michigan citizens, MAJ said in a statement. As congressman, he continued the fight to make sure that anyone who was injured or suffered consequences from the negligent act of another individual or corporation would have his or her day in court.
Mark Totten is committed to protecting consumers in this state, according to MAJ. The courts and the attorney general’s office have gutted Michigan’s Consumer Protection Act and MAJ believes that Totten will work to expand consumer protection and hold negligent corporations accountable. The citizens of this state are suffering from Bill Schuette’s corporate protectionism.
“Bill Schuette’s priorities are wrong for Michigan,” Goodwin continued. “In fact, he led the charge to make Michigan the only state in the country whose citizens have absolutely no recourse when they are hurt or killed by prescription drug companies.”
Along with the Schauer and Totten endorsements, MAJ is supporting Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Deborah Thomas for the 2-year Supreme Court position.
“Judge Thomas represents what is right with our justice system,” Goodwin said. “She believes in fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves. She will help bring new perspectives to a Supreme Court that has often supported big corporations and insurance companies over the citizens of this great state.”
Finally, former MAJ President and Flint attorney Michael J. Behm is recommended to fill the spot vacated by Julia Darlow on the University of Michigan Board of Regents. Behm graduated from the University of Michigan in 1989 and received his J.D. at Wayne Law in 1992.
