Supreme Court to hear case in Macomb Oct. 22
The Michigan Supreme Court will take its “Community Connections” program on the road to Macomb County this Wednesday, Oct. 22 to hear oral argument in the case of People of the State of Michigan v. Shawquanda Borom.
Students from a number of Macomb County high schools will have the opportunity to hear the case in the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts Auditorium, 44575 Garfield Road in Clinton Township. The venue is located on the campus of Macomb Community College.
“This is the 15th time the court has heard oral argument outside Lansing,” said a spokesman for the Supreme Court. “To date, more than 4,000 high school students have had front-row seats to study and observe Michigan’s highest court. Prior to oral argument, Chief Justice Robert P. Young Jr. and Justice David F. Viviano, a resident of Macomb County, will meet with government classes at Chippewa High School.”
Following the case, Supreme Court General Counsel Joseph Baumann will moderate a “debriefing session” with attorneys who argued before the court.
The Community Connections program is designed to enhance student awareness and understanding of Michigan’s judicial system and the importance of the rule of law.
Business Court judges to discuss technology, innovation on Oct. 29
The Detroit Legal and Technology Group will sponsor a program titled “Business Court Technology and Innovation” on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 5-7 p.m. in Courtroom 1B of the Oakland County Circuit Court on Telegraph Road.
Business Court Judges Wendy Potts and James Alexander will be the featured speakers and will provide an overview of the Oakland Business Court operation, which began in June 2013. The Business Court was established to “improve the efficiency of the courts and to utilize technology in managing business court cases,” while also enhancing the “accuracy, consistency, and predictability of decisions in business and commercial cases,” according to a court official.
Those attending should plan on arriving before 5 p.m.
Winter Meeting planned by MDTC for Nov. 7 in Troy
The Michigan Defense Trial Counsel (MDTC) will host its 2014 Winter Meeting on Friday, Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Troy Marriott, 200 W. Big Beaver Rd.
This year’s meeting is titled “Preparing for Battle: Litigation Strategies and Tools.”
During the luncheon, the 2014 Respected Advocate Awards will be presented to Thomas R. Behm (MDTC recipient) of Gruel, Mills, Nims, & Pylman PLLC; and John McSorley (MAJ recipient) of Garan, Lucow, Miller PC. The third annual Judicial Award will be presented to Judge Joseph G. Scoville.
Cost for the meeting is $210 for MDTC members, $235 for non-members, $75 for luncheon only, and $285 for a new member special (cost of meeting and one year of membership). To register, visit www.mdtc.org and click on “events.”
