 Past president of CNN, MSNBC to discuss media role in 2014 elections at WSU

Rick Kaplan, former president for CNN – U.S. and MSNBC and winner of 47 Emmys and dozens of other journalism awards, will speak Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Wayne State University.

Kaplan, whose experience in TV news spans 40 years of in-depth reporting and producing, will present “The Role of the Media in the 2014 Elections” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Bernath Auditorium of the David Adamany Undergraduate Library, 5150 Anthony Wayne Drive. Kaplan and Jack Lessenberry, longtime journalist, area head of the journalism faculty at Wayne State and senior political analyst for Michigan Radio, also will discuss Kaplan’s historic career and the future of broadcast journalism.

Kaplan founded Kaplan Media Partners in 2012 with a mission to provide the knowledge and experience to produce quality news programming and documentaries as a network consultant. His clients include Aaron Sorkin and HBO’s “The Newsroom,” and he’s also consulting on a documentary, “41 on 41,” about President George Bush Sr. Kaplan also works with corporations to develop strong media strategies.

Prior to founding his own company, Kaplan led national news coverage for decades of elections and historical events. He has produced several hours of special political and election coverage, including the 2008 “game-changing” interview between Katie Couric and then-Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin.

From 1989 to 1994, Kaplan was the executive producer of ABC News’ “Nightline” and creator and executive producer of ABC News magazine “Primetime Live.” In 1994, he became executive producer of ABC’s “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.”

From 1997 to 2000, he served as president of CNN – U.S.

In 2004, Kaplan was named president of MSNBC. His program, “A Concert for Hurricane Relief,” raised more than $50 million for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

In 2007, he was named executive producer of “The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.”

In 2011, Kaplan was named executive producer of ABC News’ “This Week with Christiane Amanpour” and was in charge of political coverage and 2012 election coverage.
