State House GOP’s K-12 budget markedly different from Snyder’s

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republicans in the Michigan House are proposing a school budget that’s markedly different from what Gov. Rick Snyder outlined last month.

K-12 districts would get a traditional per-pupil funding increase of $137 to $274 under legislation approved Tuesday by a subcommittee. It could be more or less depending on whether districts receive extra “categorical” funding.

Snyder has proposed an across-the-board $75 hike.
The legislation doesn’t include money for Snyder’s early literacy program or “distressed” districts, though talks continue. Republican Rep. Tim Kelly says he’s
trying to “kick as much money out the door with as little strings as possible.”

Democrats say the budget process is too rushed and they’re especially concerned the bill doesn’t have more money for at-risk districts.

The Senate will unveil its K-12 funding plan on Wednesday.
