Judge Terrance Keith seeks to trademark ‘Detroit RiverWalk’

DETROIT (AP) — A judge has applied to trademark the name “Detroit RiverWalk” in hopes of profiting from the sales of merchandise promoting the popular city attraction.

The Detroit News reports Wayne County Probate Judge Terrance Keith filed trademark applications last month with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the names “the Detroit RiverWalk” and “RiverWalk Detroit.”

The Detroit RiverFront Conservancy manages the RiverWalk and, according to the federal trademark database, has trademarked the name “Detroit International Riverfront.” The conservancy raises funds for construction, operation and security of public spaces along the Detroit River.

Word of the filing was reported earlier by Crain’s Detroit Business.

Keith is the author of a 2014 collection of his photographs titled “Sunrise on the Detroit River: A Love Letter to Detroit.”

Prosecutors to review crash of sled pulled by SUV; 15-year-old dies

MANLIUS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Prosecutors will be asked to determine whether charges should be brought after a sled pulled by an SUV crashed into a tree in western Michigan, killing a 15-year-old boy.

The Allegan County sheriff’s department says the sled carrying the boy was being pulled Saturday in his family’s yard in Manilus Township near Hamilton, about 45 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.

The victim is Mason Dykstra. The SUV was driven by a 19-year-old man.

The sheriff’s department says the boy was conscious after the crash and complained of some pain. He was treated by EMS and transported via helicopter to a Grand Rapids hospital. During the flight his condition worsened and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The department says Monday the death is under investigation.

Wayne State’s list seeks to bring worthy words back from brink

DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit university says it wants to bring worthy words including “delectation” back from the brink.

The word meaning “pleasure and delight” is among 10 that comprise Wayne State University's annual Word Warriors list.

The school’s 2016 edition of words that deserve to be used more often in conversation and prose was released Monday. It also includes “absquatulate,” “anathema,” “epigone,” “puerile,” “rumpus,” “sockdolager,” “sybaritic,” “torpid” and “turpitude.”

Word Warriors is beginning its eighth year.

The list comes after Sault Ste. Marie’s Lake Superior State University last week released its 41st annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. That list seeks to scrap “presser” instead of press conference, “problematic,” “'break the Internet” and several others.

Both schools accept nominations online.
