Spartans help employ Detroit's youth
Twenty-seven Spartan students spent two Saturdays, June 18 and June 25, at the Brenda Scott Academy in Detroit volunteering for Grow Detroit's Young Talent, which provides summer job training for Detroit youth.
Nearly 600 Detroit students participated in workshops covering goal setting, customer service skills and interpersonal skills. MSU students helped with registration and check-in, distribution of lunch and the facilitation of the workshops.
GDYT employs young adults between the ages of 14 and 24 for six weeks in July and August. Youth participants must be permanent residents of Detroit and be eligible to work in the United States.
This summer, jobs include community cleanups, event planning, accounting and working with the director of youth services for the City of Detroit. Last year, 5,600 local youth received employment and this year's goal is to employ 8,000 youth.
"This was a great event and a good learning opportunity for our Spartan students," said K.C. Keyton, program adviser for MSU's Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement. "Hopefully the youth of Detroit gained invaluable experiences interacting and learning from Spartans. Spartans Will. Serve."
