Wayne County set to auction 14K tax-foreclosed properties

DETROIT (AP) — Officials say more than 14,000 tax-foreclosed properties in Wayne County are scheduled for auction this year.

The office of the Wayne County Treasurer announced the listing Thursday that includes Detroit. Treasurer Eric Sabree says in a statement the foreclosure rate is down in the past year, but he notes it's unfortunate that there are so many residential properties being sold.

Bidding for the first auction starts Sept. 7 and ends in batches later in the month. A second auction starts Oct. 14 and ends Oct. 25-28.

In Wayne County, about 28,000 homes were foreclosed on last year. The treasurer's office notes that the county is bound by state law to auction foreclosed properties. A lawsuit seeking to prevent the auctioning of tax-foreclosed homes is pending.
