Court turns down appeal over University of Michigan meetings
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court won’t get involved in a dispute over closed meetings by the University of Michigan’s governing board.
The state’s highest court turned down an appeal by the Detroit Free Press. The brief order was released Thursday.
The Free Press argues that the university’s Board of Regents closes so-called informal meetings in violation of Michigan law and the state constitution. In response, regents say the meetings are information sessions and no votes are taken.
The Court of Claims and the state appeals court have ruled in favor of the university.
Dispute settled over firing at University of Michigan health system
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A lawsuit has been settled that accused the University of Michigan of illegally firing an administrator who said black patients and visitors were victims of racial profiling at campus hospitals.
The Ann Arbor News reports Dr. Carmen Green and the schools’ Board of Regents settled before this month’s scheduled trial. Green’s attorney Jim Fett says his client didn’t want to reveal the amount.
Green was ousted as head of the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion in 2015. In a court filing, the university had said she bullied co-workers and had “leadership deficiencies.”
But Green, who is black, argued she was removed because of unflattering news. The tenured professor reported security was being called more often to deal with blacks, who were grieving or emotional, than whites.

SBM to give attorney Michael W. Irish Award
The Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan presented Foster Swift attorney Douglas A. Mielock with the 2016 Michael W. Irish Award. The award is presented to a practitioner whose contributions to the Probate and Estate Planning Section, and whose service to his or her community, reflect the high standards of professionalism and selflessness of its namesake.
Mielock concentrates his practice on estate planning, estate administration and probate court litigation. Mielock is Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He has been recognized annually by Best Lawyers in America since 2001 for his work in trusts and estates.
