Judge dismisses lawsuit over quality of prison food

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A judge says Michigan prison food that might not be tasty isn’t enough to carry a lawsuit.

Federal Judge Gordon Quist last week dismissed a lawsuit by a prisoner who says his rights were violated by spoiled ground beef, a bruised orange, cold noodles and warm milk back in 2013.

Christopher Velthuysen says he was sick in 2014 after eating watered-down oatmeal, leftovers and cake without frosting. He sued the company that provides food to prisons.

The judge says “isolated incidents” are insufficient to state a legal claim over prison food. The 46-year-old Velthuysen is locked up for a second-degree murder conviction in Wayne County.

Man arrested in Michigan for Florida real estate scheme

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Florida authorities say a man has been arrested in Michigan for allegedly perpetrating a real estate scheme that defrauded victims of nearly $50,000.

In a statement Monday, Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokeswoman Angela Starke said Kervin Moreno was arrested Friday in Wayne County, Michigan.

Starke said Moreno will face a charge in Pasco County of organized scheme to defraud. Moreno allegedly posted ads online for homes for sale or rent from April 2012 through June 2014. Authorities say Moreno had no authority to sell or rent the properties.

According to FDLE, Moreno collected down payments or deposits on eight homes throughout the Tampa Bay area. The victims only became aware of the scheme after receiving foreclosure notices or visits from lender representatives.
Jail records didn’t show whether the 45-year-old had an attorney.

Henry Ford Museum changing name to reflect innovation focus

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — The Henry Ford Museum in suburban Detroit has changed its name to better convey the museum’s collection and its core focus on innovation, officials announced Monday.

The museum now will be known as the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. The museum was founded by auto pioneer Henry Ford and is part of The Henry Ford, a popular tourist destination in Dearborn, Michigan.

“Henry Ford Museum has always been about ideas and innovations that changed the world,” Patricia Mooradian, president of The Henry Ford, said in a statement. “We believe adding the word innovation to the museum’s name better serves our visitors as it clearly defines the museum’s focus.”

The museum's collection includes artifacts and exhibits that showcase American history, ideas and innovations, including the railroad, auto, aviation and agriculture industries. Other well-known artifacts include the limousine in which President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 and President George Washington's camping supplies.
