Professor to receive Lifetime Achievement Award from National Tax Association

James R. Hines Jr., the L. Hart Wright Collegiate Professor of Law at Michigan, will be awarded the Daniel M. Holland Medal from the National Tax Association—its most prestigious honor. The Holland Medal recognizes lifetime achievement in the study of the theory and practice of public finance. Hines is the second-youngest person ever to receive the Holland medal, which will be presented at the National Tax Association annual conference in November 2017.

Hines joined the Michigan Law faculty in 1997 and is co-director of the Law and Economics Program. He also is the Richard A. Musgrave Collegiate Professor of Economics and serves as the research director of the Office of Tax Policy Research in U-M's Stephen M. Ross School of Business. His research focuses on various aspects of taxation.

Beydoun named to advisory committee for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights

University of Detroit Mercy Law Professor Khaled Beydoun has been appointed to serve on the Michigan State Advisory Committee for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

Beydoun will join other citizen volunteers on the committee in assisting the Commission with its fact-finding, investigative, and information dissemination functions. According to the Commission’s website, it “seeks to ensure that advisory committees are broadly diverse and represent a variety of backgrounds, skills, experiences and perspectives. This diversity promotes vigorous debate and full exploration of the issues.” Committee members serve four-year terms and may be re-appointed for a second term.

Beydoun was recently named as the recipient of the 2017 James T. Barnes, Sr. Memorial Faculty Scholar Award at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. This prestigious award recognizes a faculty member’s outstanding scholarship, teaching excellence, and public service. A prolific scholar who works tirelessly to make his scholarship accessible to those adversely impacted by our country’s policies towards immigrant and Muslim communities, Beydoun has gained an international audience through frequent media commentary and his social media feeds.
