Henry W. Root was presented with the 2017 Ed Rubin Award by the American Bar Association Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries during the forum's Annual Meeting at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas Oct. 6. The Ed Rubin Award is the forum's highest honor and is given to one member each year in recognition of outstanding leadership and service.
Root is a partner in the entertainment law firm Lapidus, Root & Sacharow LLP in Santa Monica, Calif. Root joined the forum as a law student in 1978 and in the past decade has served three terms as chair of the Music & Personal Appearances Division, three terms as co-chair of the Annual Miami Entertainment Law Symposium and is currently serving his second term as a member of the Governing Committee.
Root has more than 35 years of legal and business affairs experience as an entertainment attorney, specializing in complex transactions for sophisticated individual and institutional clients in the music, television, film and literary industries, including content sales, acquisitions, distribution and exploitation; rights clearances; due diligence and intellectual property valuation and management. He is an adjunct faculty member of the University of Miami School of Law teaching music law. He is a noted author and frequent lecturer and panelist. Root has been repeatedly selected by his peers for inclusion in "Super Lawyers" and has been named in "Top Attorneys in North America."
Ed Rubin was the first chair of the Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries and a proponent of collegial and professional association among entertainment lawyers. He was a partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP and remembered as the force behind the establishment of the forum.
Susan Genco, co-president of Azoff/Madison Square Garden Entertainment, presented the award to Root. The forum has presented this award annually since 2004. The forum's next Annual Miami Entertainment Law Symposium will be held April 5-6 at the Palms Hotel & Spa in Miami.
