Levin Center convenes national scholars for immigration symposium at Wayne Law

More than 90 people attended the Levin Center at Wayne Law’s Nov. 10 symposium in Detroit, “Current Issues in Immigration Law: Detention, ‘Sanctuary Cities,’ and the ‘Travel Ban.’” The event brought together top scholars and leaders from across the country to discuss Immigration Detention in the United States; Sanctuary Cities: Immigration Law Meets Federalism; Iraqi Deportations in Detroit: Community Perspectives and Responses; and The President, the Courts and the “Travel Ban.”

Eighteen experts participated in the event, hailing from institutions including Georgetown University Law Center, University of Michigan Law School and University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Moderating the discussions (respectively) were Associate Professor Rachel Settlage, Professor Paul Dubinsky, Assistant Professor (Clinical) Sabrina Balgamwalla, and Professor Jonathan T. Weinberg, all members of the Wayne Law faculty.

Providing opening remarks were conference moderator Professor Robert M. Ackerman, director of the Levin Center at Wayne Law; Dean Richard A. Bierschbach; and former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, chair of the Levin Center at Wayne Law.

This was the fourth national symposium for the Levin Center at Wayne Law, which was established in 2015 to inspire and train a new generation to ensure that public and private institutions operate with integrity, transparency and accountability to the general public in honor of Levin’s distinguished career in public service.
