James H. (Jim) Townsend, a former member of the Michigan legislature, has been appointed to the bipartisan advisory board of the Levin Center at Wayne State University Law School.
He joins 19 other members on the board.
Townsend is an associate in the Detroit office of Butzel Long and a member of its Corporate and Real Estate Practice Group. Prior to joining the firm, he represented the 26th District in the Michigan House of Representatives.
He serves on the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s advisory council of the Redevelopment Ready Communities® program. Before his career in law, Townsend was legislative director for the office of U.S. Representative Nita M. Lowey and worked for U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg. Townsend’s private sector experience includes working as a brand manager at Ford Motor Company, founding and directing the Michigan Suburbs Alliance (now known as Metro Matters), and leading economic development at the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Townsend is a 2016 graduate of Wayne Law and was a student representative on the Levin Center’s faculty committee from 2015-16. Additionally, Townsend was a member of the Wayne Law Review and was honored with the award for Best Note. Upon graduation, he was elected to Wayne Law’s chapter of the Order of the Coif.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and an M.B.A. and M.P.P. from the University of Michigan.
Launched in March 2015, the Levin Center at Wayne Law strives to educate future attorneys, business leaders, legislators and public servants on their role overseeing public and private institutions and using oversight as an instrument of change. The center is named in honor of former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, Michigan’s longest-serving U.S. senator, who retired at the beginning of 2015 after 36 years in the Senate. Levin serves as chair of the Levin Center and on the law school’s faculty as distinguished legislator in residence.
