Nominations sought for Carl Levin Award for Effective Oversight

The Levin Center at Wayne State University Law School is accepting nominations for the inaugural Carl Levin Award for Effective Oversight, in honor of former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin’s legacy as a champion for fact-based, bipartisan legislative oversight investigations.

The award celebrates a current or former U.S. legislator at any level of government who has led or played a significant role in a bipartisan oversight investigation. Complete candidate criteria and the nomination form can be found at go.wayne.edu/carllevinaward. Nominations for 2018 will be accepted until June 1 and kept on file for annual consideration.

A core principal of the Levin Center at Wayne Law is to promote the development of effective oversight by legislative bodies. To date, the center, in partnership with the Project on Government Oversight and The Lugar Center, has trained 125 congressional staff from both parties on the art and practice of bipartisan congressional oversight.

The center operates under the vision that when conducted well, on a bipartisan basis, with a commitment to finding the facts and uncovering the truth, oversight fulfills the checks and balances envisioned by the Constitution, fosters bipartisan legislative relationships, builds public trust in legislatures, and improves public policy and government programs.

Levin is chair of the Levin Center at Wayne Law and serves on the law school faculty as its distinguished legislator in residence. In his 36-year Senate career, he earned respect from his colleagues on both sides of the political aisle for his integrity, resourcefulness and diligence, and ability to build consensus. He became one of the nation’s most respected leaders on national security, a powerful voice for equality and justice, and a fighter for economic fairness.

The Levin Center is supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Democracy Fund and Wellspring Advisors.
