Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs to host ‘Lifting as We Climb Brunch’ March 31

March is Women’s History Month. The Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs will host the “Lifting as We Climb Brunch” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on March 31 at its historic clubhouse to commemorate the work of legal champions. Honorees include Chief Judge Denise Page-Hood and the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan for their committed hard work for women’s causes. Tickets are $35 per person and are available on Eventbrite. Net proceeds support the preservation of the club’s home and community activities. Donations may be mailed to The Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs, at 5461 Brush, Detroit, MI 48202.

Dr. Rosa Gragg, often referred to as the other “Rosa” by Detroit historians, purchased the famous club house that sits on the corner of Brush and Ferry in 1941, segregating the area now referred to as midtown. Neighbors were so resistant to integration, she was forced to move the porch and entrance of the house to the Brush side.

Judges limit where prosecutor can go in Michigan courthouse

COLDWATER, Mich. (AP) — A county prosecutor in southern Michigan has been barred from talking to certain women in the courthouse unless a male employee or a sheriff’s deputy is present.

It’s one of many conditions placed on Ralph Kimble by Branch County judges. He’s been accused of sexual harassment but firmly denies the allegations. There’s also a recall campaign against him.

A Feb. 22 order obtained by TV station WWMT says Kimble is barred from the second floor of the courthouse except for courtrooms or judges’ offices. He can’t speak alone to a female employee of the judiciary.

Kimble tells radio station WTVB that it’s “more dirty politics” by judges. He says he’s “not their team player.”

Bishop urges victims  to come forward after priest charged

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) — The Catholic Diocese of Saginaw’s bishop is encouraging sexual abuse victims to come forward after a priest who served for decades in Michigan was charged with sex crimes.

Bishop Joseph Cistone recently spoke to parishioners at St. Agnes Church in Freeland, where 71-year-old Rev. Robert DeLand served as pastor. Cistone told parishioners the allegations against DeLand were “the first indication we had of this issue.”

DeLand was charged last month following allegations from two male accusers, ages 17 and 21, and police say they’ve received other complaints since his arrest. Charges include second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The Saginaw News reports Saginaw County Prosecutor John McColgan Jr. announced Thursday that a new law enforcement taskforce will investigate abuse allegations.

DeLand’s lawyer has said the priest has dedicated his life to service.
