On Monday, June 4, the Northwest Wayne Chapter of Families Against Narcotics will show the acclaimed documentary film “Chasing the Dragon”, followed by a panel discussion with experts from the FBI, the DEA, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The event will take place from 6:30-8:30 pm at the LifeChurch Annex Building, located at 6900 N. Haggerty Rd. in Canton.
In 2016, the FBI and DEA released the documentary "Chasing the Dragon" to help raise awareness of the devastating consequences of opioid addiction. Since then, this film has been shown in many different venues and has had a powerful impact. On Monday following a screening of the film, a panel of experts from the FBI and the DEA will discuss the opioid epidemic, its impact, and what these law enforcement agencies are doing to combat this devastating scourge in our community. Panelists will include Supervisory Special Agent Reuben Coleman and Special Agent Mara Schneider, both with the FBI; Rich Isaacson of the Drug Enforcement Agency; Mitchell Kittle from the U.S. Attorney’s Office; and Will Council from the FBI Community Outreach Program, Office of Public Affairs.
“This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to see this powerful film, and to hear what our local federal law enforcement agencies are doing about drug addiction in our community”, said Lauren Rousseau, president of Northwest Wayne Families Against Narcotics and professor of law at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. “We are excited to have the opportunity to show this film, and to have such a knowledgeable and esteemed panel of experts to discuss our government’s response to the opioid epidemic.”
The Northwest Wayne Chapter of Families Against Narcotics launched a year ago April to provide education, resources, and support to families impacted by addiction. The nonprofit organization presents public forums the first Monday of each month, from 6:30-8:30 pm at the LifeChurch Annex, where speakers present on various addiction-related topics. The organization also offers two support groups that meet twice each month in Canton: the Family & Friends Support Group, which meets at the Canton Administration Building at 1150 S. Canton Center Rd from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of each month; and the Grief Support Group for people who have lost loved ones to addiction, which meets at the PC Alano Club, located at 8669 N. Lilley Rd., from 7-8:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
