Overdoses stretching Grand Rapids-area medical examiner

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A medical examiner in a western Michigan county is seeking an additional $470,000 to keep up with autopsies and other tasks related to the rising number of opioid overdoses.

Dt. Stephen Cohle (COAL) says his staff “is just worn to a nub” as a result of opioid-related deaths in Kent County, which includes Grand Rapids. He says his office investigated 156 drug overdoses in 2017, up 67 percent over 2016.

Cohle predicts the 2018 numbers will be higher.

He tells The Grand Rapids Press that calls come in at all hours. Many investigators work part-time. Cohle hopes county leaders will provide money for him to hire at least one more part-time investigator.

Lessons in Family Law Seminar: ‘When Client Counseling and Courtroom Advocacy Conflict’

The Oakland County Bar Association is hosting a family law seminar, “When Client Counseling and Courtroom Advocacy Conflict” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 20 at the OCBA Offices, 1760 South Telegraph Road, Suite 100 in Bloomfield Hills.

In practice, attorneys must act as both counselor to, and advocate for, their clients. In family law cases, where emotions and stress levels are particularly high, sometimes clients do not always want to follow their attorney’s recommendations. What happens in court in these situations? The panelists will offer practice pointers for acting as both counselor and advocate when the client will not take the attorney’s advice.

Speakers include Honorable Lisa Langton, Sixth Judicial Court; Mark A. Bank, Esq., Bank Rifkin, PLLC; and Keri Middleditch, Esq., Middleditch Law Firm, PLLC.

The cost to attend is $40 for OCBA members; $30 for OCBA New Lawyers (P74739 ) and paralegals; and $60 for non-members.

Register online at www.ocba.org. At the door price is $65 for OCBA members; $90 for non-members.
