Journalist Cokie Roberts to speak at Blanchard Forum
Author, journalist and commentator Cokie Roberts will be the featured speaker at the Gov. Jim Blanchard Public Service Forum at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 27 at Pasant Theater in Wharton Center.
During the live question and answer conversation with former Michigan Gov. Jim Blanchard, Roberts will give an analysis of the November 2018 election.
Roberts is a political commentator for ABC News and NPR. In her more than 40 years in broadcasting, she has won countless awards, including three Emmys. She has been inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and was cited by the American Women in Radio and Television as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting. In addition to her reporting, Roberts has written six New York Times bestsellers, most dealing with the roles of women in U.S. history.
The Gov. Jim Blanchard Public Service Forum is administered by the Department of Political Science.
“The forum honors those who have distinguished themselves in politics, diplomacy, public service and journalism,” Blanchard said. “The goal is to give students and the larger community a chance to meet them and be energized by them. We are excited to be able to have Cokie Roberts on campus to do this.”
“In a very short time, with leadership from former Gov. Jim Blanchard, this forum has become an important regular event-series for our department as well as students and members of the university community,” said Charles Ostrom, chairperson of the Department of Political Science.

Ex-police chief faces charges related to video poker arcade
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — A former police chief of Flint, Michigan, is facing charges in connection with a video poker arcade.
The Flint Journal reports 66-year-old Bradford Barksdale is due in court this month after being arraigned in October on charges of gambling, using a computer to commit a crime and possession of a short-barreled shotgun or rifle. Barksdale stepped aside as Flint’s chief in 2004.
The Associated Press sent a message seeking comment from his lawyer Brenda Williams. She waived a hearing that was scheduled for Thursday.
The allegations follow a raid on West Point Arcade in Flint Township. Adam Crossnoe and his father Alvin Crossnoe also are charged in the case. Attorney Fred Meiers, who represents the Crossnoes, says the operation is “above-board” but the law is “difficult for anyone to interpret.”
