Lawsuit can move ahead for prisoner denied Muslim holy day
ADRIAN, Mich. (AP) — Two Michigan prison chaplains can be sued for not allowing an inmate to participate in a Muslim religious event.
A federal appeals court on Thursday affirmed a lower court ruling that said Derrick Maye’s constitutional rights were violated in 2013 and 2014.
Maye says he was denied participation in Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, a holy month in the Muslim faith. He was housed at prisons in Adrian and Jackson. The appeals court says Maye was turned down, despite a policy change at the Corrections Department because of a different lawsuit.
Lawyers for the chaplains called it an “isolated incident.” The appeals court says any reasonable prison employee would know that it was a First Amendment violation.
Ann Arbor attorney Edward Charles Reynolds, Jr. dies, 75
Attorney Edward Charles Reynolds, Jr. died Feb. 3 at the age of 75.
A Maryland native, Reynolds attended high school in Boston and came to Ann Arbor as an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan. While a student, he and two local priests established Canterbury House, a coffee house and well-known performance venue for folk music in the 1960s.
Reynolds attended Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Mass., and was ordained as an Episcopal Priest in 1972.
He served as a parish priest at a church in the downriver area of Detroit for several years before enrolling in law school at the University of Detroit, where he was the Editor of the Law Review.
Reynolds graduated from law school in 1979 and practiced at law firms in Wayne County, Oakland County and Washtenaw County, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in medical malpractice cases.
His last and most favorite job was as a defense malpractice attorney for the University of Michigan Health System. He retired five years ago.
Reynolds was the beloved husband of Barbara (Hooberman), father of Nathaniel and Samuel Reynolds and stepfather of Amy and Lauren Hooberman; and grandfather to Charlie, Cameron, Lachlan, Oliver and Isaac.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral service was at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor on Feb. 11.
The family will appreciate donations to the Breakfast Program at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church or to a charity of one’s choice, in Reynolds’ name.
