Man released after being arrested in freeway shootings
ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a man who was arrested in connection with two shootings a day apart on Interstate 94 west of Detroit has been released without facing charges.
Michigan State Police say the 25-year-old Romulus man was arrested at his apartment Tuesday. Investigators say evidence, including witnesses' descriptions of a vehicle, led them to the man. State police said Wednesday on Twitter , however, that he was released after "further investigation and interviews."
The first was reported early Monday on I-94 near Interstate 275 in Romulus. A motorist reported being shot at by someone in another vehicle, and several rounds struck his car.
The second happened early Tuesday in the same area, when another motorist told police his car was fired upon by someone in a vehicle.
Police say nobody was injured.
Former Michigan officer avoids jail for running over suspect
BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A former officer who ran over a man who was fleeing police in southwestern Michigan has been acquitted of assault but convicted of reckless driving.
Berrien County Trial Court Judge Arthur Cotter delivered the verdict Tuesday in the case against Steven Johnson and ordered him to pay $625 in fines and costs. Johnson received no jail time or probation for the misdemeanor conviction.
Johnson called it a "horrible accident" and says he didn't mean to hurt the man.
Prosecutors said Benton Harbor officers were investigating a possible stolen lawn mower early on May 10, 2018, when they came upon a man who was riding a bike without a light. The prosecutor's office says the man dropped the bike and ran before Johnson intentionally hit him with a squad car.
