A POWER Act Panel Presentation was presented Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Wayne County Community College District in Detroit. The POWER Act (Pro Bono Work to Empower and Represent Act of 2018, P.L. 115-237) requires each judicial district within the judiciary to hold an annual event to encourage the legal community to provide pro bono services to survivors of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The program also was designed to make domestic violence victims aware that pro bono legal assistance is available. Taking part in the program were (front, l-r) Maureen Flavin; U.S. District Court Chief Judge Denise Page Hood, Eastern District of Michigan; Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Melissa Anne Cox; and Lakeshore Legal Aid CEO Ashley Lowe; (back) U.S. District Court Judge Marianne O. Battani, Eastern District of Michigan; U.S. District Court Administrator David Weaver, Eastern District of Michigan; and Stephanie Shaull, a social worker and domestic violence specialist for the City of Detroit.
