Law Day event slated at U.S. District Court

The U.S. District Court, the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and the Wolverine Bar Association are jointly hosting a Law Day open house on Monday, May 2.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Theodore Levin U.S. District Courthouse, 231 W. Lafayette, in Detroit. The theme of Law Day 2011 is “The Legacy of John Adams: from Boston to Guantanamo,” and will highlight the nation’s first lawyer-president.

The complimentary program is open to the public and includes an “Ask the Lawyer” pro bono component. Volunteer lawyers will be at the federal court to offer free legal advice to those without counsel on such topics as employment law, civil rights, fraud, truth in lending, product liability, and more. For U.S. District Court cases only, a pro bono attorney may be assigned upon request.

Registration for the “Ask the Lawyer” program is on the first floor in the alcove just past Courtroom 100.
Several agencies are participating in Law Day, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Coast Guard; Border Patrol; Consumer Bankruptcy Association; Courthouse Museum; Drug Enforcement Agency; FBI; Federal Defenders Office; Immigration and Customs Enforcement; IRS; U.S. Attorney’s Office; U.S. District Court; U.S. Probation Department; U.S. Pretrial Services Agency; U.S. Marshals Service; and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department.

Also at the open house will be bomb-sniffing dogs, as well as exhibits on counterfeit currency and confiscated firearms.
