A cultural exchange took place August 5 when the law firm of Pitt McGehee Palmer & Rivers hosted a group of visiting Indian journalists at its Royal Oak office. The journalists were here as part of the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program, according to attorneys Cary McGehee and Bob Palmer, pictured third and fourth from right in the top photo. The program arranges short-term visits to the U.S. for emerging foreign professionals in a variety of fields to experience “this country firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts,” McGehee indicated. Detroit was one of six cities on the group’s itinerary. McGehee and Palmer provided an overview of employment law in the U.S. and how it protects the rights of American workers. The journalists also asked a number of questions about the U.S. legal system, the difference between state and federal courts, and the method of selection and tenure for judges. “It was interesting to discuss the differences between the Indian legal system and ours, even though both are based on the English model,” Palmer said.
