Women Lawyers Association of Michigan to hold annual meeting at Soaring Eagle Casino

The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (WLAM) is holding their 93rd Annual Meeting and Jean King Leadership Award Reception on April 29, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Soaring Eagle Hotel & Casino in Mt. Pleasant. There will be a welcome reception April 28 from 7-10 p.m.

The  Jean King Leadership Award honors and recognizes lawyers who exemplify leadership while furthering WLAM’s mission to secure the rights of women in society and to advance women in the legal profession. Past award winners have included Ms. King herself, Nancy Diehl, Kim Cahill, Deborah LaBelle and Kathleen Bogas. This year’s award winner will be Jennifer B. Salvatore of Nacht and Associates, who has dedicated herself to the support of women and works tirelessly as a leader in the legal community for gender equity issues. Salvatore will also be a speaker at the event.

This year’s meeting includes a cultural immersion program where attendees can learn about Tribal Court and experience a number of Native American traditions. These include a woman’s drum group performance, native cuisine and a visit to a nearby cultural center. The Honorable Angela Sherigan, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, will lead the Tribal Court discussion, who is also incoming president of WLAM. Sherigan will join her sister, Kristen Stone of Wojnecka and Sherigan, P.C., for a discussion of the Indian Child Welfare Act.

Also speaking at the meeting will be Julie Fershtman, Foster, Swift, Smith and Collins, P.C., incoming president of the State Bar of Michigan (SBM), who will offer advice and suggestions for how to market oneself to corporate clients, and discuss the SBM President’s Advisory Group on Diversity and Inclusion; and Elizabeth Jolliffe, Owner, Your Benchmark Coach, leading a discussion on social media and  image.

Costs for the meeting are $75 for WLAM members, $90 for non-members, $50 for law students, and $30 for lunch only. (The luncheon is from 12noon-2 p.m. and includes swearing in of the state board.)
