Foster Care Review Board releases report, seeks volunteers
The Foster Care Review Board (FCRB) is a program established by the Legislature to provide third-party review of foster care placements and related matters. There are 30 local review boards throughout the state, made up of volunteers. The FCRB has just released its annual report, available online at http://courts.michigan.gov/scao//resources/publications/reports/fcrb/fcrb_ar11.pdf.

Varnum awards LSAT scholarships
Varnum has awarded LSAT Preparation Course Scholarships to two junior-level Michigan college students, Sukhvir Kaur and Christopher Creger. The two scholarships are valued at up to $1,500 each, covering the cost to participate in an LSAT preparation course offered by Kaplan Test Prep and Admission.
The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a half-day standardized test, an integral part of the law school admissions process in the United States, Canada and a growing number of other countries.
“The LSAT is the doorway to law school,” says Joy Fossel, Varnum Attorney and Diversity and Inclusion Counsel. “Varnum is interested in making law school accessible to a wide variety of individuals. Providing a scholarship for the LSAT prep course is an excellent way to keep that doorway wide open.” The scholarship aims to ensure adequate preparation of undergraduate students who desire to attend law school and who demonstrate a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the legal profession and/or their community.
Sukhvir Kaur, a political science major from Kalamazoo College, focuses much of her efforts on volunteer activities, from an immigration assistance program (she hopes to study immigration law) to a homeless shelter. Kaur’s background and community involvement have taught her that, “Our differences – our diversity – are what make a collective group stronger.”
Christopher Creger currently attends Grand Valley State University, majoring in finance, which has led him to internships with Chemical Bank and Independent Bank. Family struggles strengthened Creger’s interest in the law, and he hopes his experiences translate into a different and unique approach to the legal system.
Varnum started its Diversity and Inclusion team more than 15 years ago.
