Warner Norcross selects Branch Rickey for One Book, One Firm series

The law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP has chosen “Branch Rickey” by Jimmy Breslin as the 2014 selection for its One Book, One Firm series.

Now in its seventh year, the One Book, One Firm program explores the issues of diversity and inclusion during a summer lunch-and-learn program. Launched in 2008 by Diversity Partner Rodney Martin, the annual event is modeled after the success of community reading programs that encourage all residents of a city to read, discuss and share the experience of the same book.

“Branch Rickey” tells the story of the president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers who changed the sport of baseball by bringing African-American slugger Jackie Robinson into the major leagues.  The story is told by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Jimmy Breslin, who chronicles the story of a poor boy from Ohio who challenged racism head-on and made a place for himself in history – and in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Attorneys and staff from all eight Warner Norcross offices across the state will join in a special lunch-and-learn program on Tuesday, July 9 to discuss the book.  The program will focus on the ideals of courage and conviction and will be led by partners at the firm who will share their personal experiences with race and acceptance in America.

The firm has also launched the Diversity Book Club, which offers year-round reading and discussion opportunities of fiction and non-fiction works.  Books selected for this series have included “The Zookeeper’s Wife, “Whatever It Takes: Geoffrey Canada’s Quest to Change Harlem and America” and “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents.”

Other recommended books for the One Book, One Firm program include:

—The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi Durrow, a novel that focuses on a biracial girl who goes to live with her African-American grandmother

—Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception Across the Color Line by Martha Sandweiss, non-fiction that explores the life of Clarence King, a brilliant African-American scientist who had a secret life as a Pullman porter

—Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life, the autobiography of Queen Noor, an American who became the queen of Jordan

—Rose Hill: An Intermarriage Before its Time by Carlos Cortes, an autobiography of growing up with a Russian-Jewish Father and a Mexican-Catholic mother
