Calley, task force seek public input to address prescription drug, opioid abuse
Lt. Gov. Brian Calley has announced that the Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Task Force is seeking public input on how the state can address challenges associated with prescription drug and opioid abuse.
“We are eager to hear the ideas and thoughts of our state’s concerned residents in order to develop a more effective strategy to address this critical issue,” Calley said.
The task force, created by Gov. Rick Snyder in June and chaired by Calley, is reviewing current practices and previous reports regarding prescription drug and opioid abuse in Michigan. Snyder has requested recommendations for a comprehensive strategy, and the task force is interested in gathering public and stakeholder opinions on additional concerns that need to be addressed.
The public hearing will take place in Lansing on Tuesday, July 21 at the Michigan State Capitol in the House Appropriations Committee Room from 5 – 7 p.m. Please indicate via phone or email if special accommodations to attend the meeting are necessary.

GRBA seeks Constitution Day volunteers
On Sept. 17, 1787, the delegates to the constitutional convention met for the last time to sign the United States Constitution. To commemorate this historic event, Congress designated Sept. 17 of every year as “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.”
This year, the Grand Rapids Bar Association has again partnered with the Grand Rapids Public Schools to celebrate this day.
GRBA’s goal is to pair each of the district's fifth grade classrooms with an attorney who will present a one-hour lesson about the United States Constitution. Because that is a lot of volunteers, GRBA is striving to make the biggest impact with the smallest volunteer time commitment. With just one hour out of your day, you can give the future generation a deeper understanding of their government and the role they play in it.
On your visit to the classroom you will focus on just one portion of the Constitution (your choice!) for an hour-long presentation to the class. GRBA encourages you to be creative, be innovative, and have fun with the kids. Your perspective will be valuable and inspiring. Need help generating ideas? The GRBA has materials available to help you organize your thoughts and develop creative ideas.
