Roberts is co-editor of 2017 Michigan Tax Guide

Varnum tax attorney Wayne Roberts and Western Michigan University Cooley Law School Professor Marjorie Gell are co-editors of the 2017 edition of the CCH Wolters Kluwer Guidebook to Michigan Taxes. This is the sixth year in a row that Roberts and Gell have partnered to serve as contributing editors of the book that serves as the definitive guide to Michigan taxes for CPAs and other tax preparers.

Designed as a quick reference work, the Guidebook presents succinct discussions of state and local taxes, describing the general provisions of the respective tax laws and regulations and highlighting significant cases and administrative rulings.
The Guidebook is designed to:

—Give a general picture of the impact and pattern of all taxes levied by the State of Michigan and the general property tax levied by local government units.

—Provide a readable, quick reference work for the personal income tax and the single business tax. As such it explains briefly what the Michigan law provides and indicates whether the Michigan provision is the same as federal law.

—Analyze and explain the differences, in most cases, between Michigan and federal law.

The annual publication is useful to tax practitioners, in-state and multistate businesspersons, and those who are obligated to file Michigan returns or who are required to deal with Michigan taxes.

Roberts is a member of Varnum's tax team whose practice includes all aspects of federal and state tax planning and litigation. He is a frequent writer and speaker on tax matters and is active as a leader in the Tax Sections of the State Bar of Michigan, the American Bar Association, the Grand Rapids Bar Association, and the National Association of State Bar Tax Sections. He is an adjunct professor at Walsh College and Western Michigan University-Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
